Chapter Eleven

Nadar

He shouldn't have taken Mara to see the shrine, Nadar knew that.

It was forbidden by the highest decree, and although he wasn't one to play by the rules, he had always treated the holy places with the respect they deserved. If someone had told him a few days ago he'd disobey the sacred laws of his people, Nadar would have cut the speaker's tongue out for such blasphemy.

Mara was changing everything for him. Before, it would have been unthinkable for Nadar to take a stranger to a place holy for Corgans. But when the moment came and Mara looked so excited and happy, he found that there was nothing easier.

He wanted to do more, to give her everything. Nadar would have liked to lay the world before her beautiful feet.

It came with a price, however. None of his warriors suspected anything when he told them to ready a ship for him and Mara. They said nothing, as was their place, when they took off and left the Citadel behind to prepare for the coming war.

A few odd looks were directed at him when Nadar gave them the directions, but they supposed he had something else in mind. Perhaps he had a plan for the female, or maybe it was a false move to confuse the enemy. Whatever it was, the clan didn't doubt their lord.

Not until they landed near the shrine.

During the flight, Nadar had felt the unease grow within the small vessel. He'd seen the looks exchanged between his warriors. The change of mood was almost physically present, filling the air with heavy, foreboding anticipation. And he still didn't care. It was his clan that was about to doubt his judgment, but Nadar barely noticed.

Mara was with him, right in his arms in the little compartment of the lifter ship. She stood pressed against him, seemingly for support, but the warlord knew better. He could see the way her body hungrily leaned in, searching for more contact with him. It was clear his feelings toward the female weren't one-sided.

And the smile he'd wanted to see since the first moment he laid eyes on Mara was there now. She didn't seem to understand the danger they were in, nor the fact that she was going to make the situation so much worse simply by existing.

There was an endearing ease to her choices after the war had been declared; a child-like joy released. Nadar found himself liking it immensely. Not only that, he found himself a slave to it. If seeing the shrine made Mara happy, he would make it happen.

The lifter ship landed farther from the shrine than he'd ordered. Nadar absently noticed it, completely mesmerized by Mara's beautiful hazel eyes shining, and the way her body seemed to shiver when he held her closer.

As soon as they touched ground, the warlord moved, leading Mara out of the ship and into the clean air. For one so clever, the female was very innocent. There was a clear look of surprise on her face that she couldn't hide when the warriors approached her, blades drawn.
